In some cases, the automatic upgrade process will fail to detect the old payroll data file, or detect an incorrect version, resulting in missing payroll data in your new version. This is why we recommend doing a Backup before upgrading.

However, this is no cause for alarm - Payback always leaves old data files on the system during an upgrade, nothing gets deleted or overwritten. In the case of a failed upgrade, all you need to do is restore the backup you made prior to the upgrade. If this fails, then follow the instructions below to find and restore the old data file;

These instructions assume you're running Payback from your C: drive, and not a network share location.

1) Startup Payback, make sure the version at the top of the screen is the latest version (check the latest version on our Support page)

2) Click on 'Payroll' and ensure '2009' is selected from the Year dropdown.

3) Select any of the employees, and click the 'History' tab.

4) If there are NO payments against the employee for 2009, then it may be the case that the software detected the wrong version during the upgrade

5) Click Admin / Support on the left and then Diagnostics at the top

6) Click the 'Search for database files' button, and let it run (this may take a while, especially in Vista)

7) When the search has completed, look in the grid for a version 6 data file with the latest 'Last Used' date - DO NOT double-click it.

8) Make a note of the file path and file name - This is probably the file which contains your 2009 data

9) Click 'Backup' on the left, then 'Restore' and the 'Restore' button

10) Navigate to the location and file you noted in point 8.

11) Restore that file, and restart Payback

12) Check if your recent payroll data is now present (History tab in the Payroll screen is the best place for this)

If you still have problems finding or restoring old data, then email us at support@payback.ie
